The Mississippi River Basin is a 1.2 million square mile hydrologic funnel, draining 41% of the contiguous United States. Our Heartland Artery project focuses on the intersection of heavy industrial discharge and agricultural nutrient loads. By treating the river system like a living organism, we deploy targeted biological defenses to stop pollution upstream.
Freshwater Sponge Filtration
Using native filter-feeding sponges (such as Spongilla lacustris) to naturally remove bacteria and micro-plastics through constant, high-volume water processing.
Riparian Buffer Restoration
Establishing native willows and cottonwoods along riverbanks to act as the river's natural kidneys, metabolizing agricultural nitrogen and trapping heavy metals.
Microbial & Plastic Interdiction
Employing root-zone microbes to break down industrial chemicals, alongside passive kinetic barriers that capture floating macro-plastics at major river confluences.
